Lasik is a type of eye surgery that is often performed in the developed countries. A surgical procedure that changes shape of cornea is Lasik. This is done to reduce need of contacts and glasses. Lasik has many benefits over other surgical procedures.

Dry eyes after the Lasik or Lasik dry eye is a condition common during immediate recovery period. Lasik dry eye causes vision fluctutions, discomfort, poor vision quality and slow healing. People who had dry eye symptoms after Lasik are resolved within the normal healing period. The healing period is of 5 to 6 months. Here there is no doubt that Lasik induces dry eye. But why dry eye problems occur after Lasik is not completely understood.

 

Lasik dry eye is the result of multitude of events that occur during the surgery. Right combination of events gives rise to dry eye symptoms.

Lasik dry eye is believed to be caused by nerves in cornea being severed during the creation of Lasik flap when excimer laser takes away the corneal tissue and by alteration in shape of cornea. The disruption of cornea nerves leads to decline in sensitivity of cornea which in turn leads to interruption of flow of sequence of information to tearing system. The patient may blink less due to lack of sensitivity. It is possible that disruption of corneal nerves may provide sensation of chronic dry eyes. If the eyes after Lasik are inappropriately dry the patient may sensation of chronic dry eyes. While the corneal nerves heal there may be chronic dry eye symptoms. The corneal sensitivity may return after a short time.

There are some useful treatments to manage lasik dry eye problems. These techniques have immensely helped patients to recover from lasik dry eye problems. After surgery your doctor should do an eye health examination. Your doctor should evaluate the condition of your eyes after surgery. Slow healing process of lasik dry eyes may cause other problems. The doctor should be sure that other health problems are not contributing to lasik dry eyes.

Check the medications after surgery. The doctor may prescribe you some medicines that you will take after surgery. See to it that these medicines do not induce dry eyes. Medicines like antihistamines, hormone replacement therapy medicines, allergy medicines can bring lasik dry eye symptoms. Do not take medicines without consulting the doctor. Inform the doctor about the medicines you are taking.
