Normal vision needs a moist ocular surface. The ocular surface should also be healthy and will always remain so if there is regular blinking, normal lid closure, adequate quality of tears and normal composition of tear film.

Due to excessive tear evaporation or tear deficiency, the normal composition of tear film may drastically change which may cause damage to interpalpebral ocular surface. This disorder of tear film is termed as dry eye. Dry eye disease is due to insufficient moisture and lubrication in the eye. This may lead to constant irritation, scratching, persistent dryness and burning sensation in your eyes. These signs are sufficient for your doctor to tell you that you are suffering from dry eye disease. Some also experience foreign body sensation in the eye Ocular discomfort is one of the symptoms of dry eyes. Eyes becomes dry because enough tears are not being produced or because rate of evaporation of eye tears is abnormally high. Dry eye disease is a part of natural ageing process.

Environmental factors such as dry climates, air pollution, hair dryer, air  travel, watching TV, central heating, car windscreen demisting, contact lens wear are also responsible for dry eye disease. Dry eye disease may also occur as side effect of certain medicines such as antidepressants, antihistamines and blood pressure medicines. If excess birth control pills are taken this may also lead to dry eye disease.

Although many equate uncomfortable eyes with dry eye disease, serious vision complications may happen. If neglected dry eye disease may give rise to desiccation of corneal epithelium, perforation and ulceration of cornea, frequent infection of the eyes and serious visual impairment which may lead to blindness. That is why diagnosis and sufficient treatment to dry eyes is very important. Dry eyes are a symptom of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, rosacea etc

There have been some recent developments related to dry eye treatment. It has been realized that person suffering from dry eye disease has a low grade inflammation. If anti inflammatory agents are used it may help the patients. It has been found that androgen deficiency is also responsible for dry eye disease.

Latest studies show that dry eye is more found in women due to hormone imbalance and fluctuations. Smoking also increases chances of having dry eye disease. Insufficient blinking is another cause of dry eye disease when you working with a computer all day
